M1855 lock plate excavated from the Chancellorsville Battlefield. It is missing the eagle embossed door but
otherwise in very good condition. Parts of the “Harpers Ferry” markings are still visible on the face. A rare
lock plate, most of these will have the “Springfield” mark.
A total of 7,317 Model 1855 Rifles were manufactured at Harper's Ferry Arsenal between 1858 and 1861.
At least 1500 1855 Rifles were destroyed in April 1861 when Confederate forces captured the arsenal at
Harpers Ferry and the storage warehouses were burned. The accurate 1855 rifle was a popular weapon and
virtually all available 1855 rifles were issued by both Federal and Confederate armies during the first years
of the Civil War. As a result, the survival rate of 1855 rifles was low. The Model 1855 Rifle was the most
advanced muzzle loading long arm in service at the outbreak of the Civil War. It featured the Maynard
mechanical self-priming system.
