Original woodcuts from Civil War dated Harper’s Weekly or Leslie’s Illustrated Newspapers printed in New York City. Drawings were done in the field by different artists and were then sent back to New York, where they were carved on wooden blocks for printing. The first date listed is the actual printing date. Steel engravings were etched on steel plates for printing resulting in much greater detail. The dates listed are for the year they were engraved.
