Stafford County was home to the Federal Army
of the  Potomac during the winter of 1862 – 1863.
From these  camps they marched to the Battles of
  Fredericksburg,  Chancellorsville and the Wilderness.
Many never returned, leaving personal items behind.
The regimental camps consisted of log huts like the
one pictured used by officers of the 61st New York Infantry. The huts were partially below ground and after the war, collapsed in on themselves and were forgotten. The artifacts in this case were excavated from such hut sites. They include eating utensils, pocket knife and a standard issue “Eagle” button among others.
